IRS Phone Scam

According to the IRS’s website taxpayers need to be extra careful with people posing as IRS agents attempting to steal their money.

These scam phone calls can be very extreme with threatening to arrest, deportation and even revoking the individual’s license if they do not pay a fake tax bill.

The scammers will alter caller ID numbers so they can make it look like they are calling from the IRS or another agency. They might even try to use your address and some type of personal information.

According to the IRS they will never demand immediate payment using a specific payment method like a prepaid debit card, a gift card or wire transfer. They usually will mail a bill to the taxpayer that owes taxes.

If you receive one of these calls:

  • Do not give any information and hang up immediately
  • Report to the Federal Trade Commission on the FTC.Gov
