How to spot a SCAM!

                                           

Believe it or Not, there are so many types of scams out there today, it is hard to tell which is real.
Here are just a few that you may see:

Advance Fee Scams
They may promise you some type of prize. The prize usually come from a foreign Lottery or even a long passed relative that left you an inheritance. They usually want upfront payment to get this, but they want you to send a wire transfer, online payment, or a gift card from some store.

Tech Support Scams
You might get a pop up that shows Microsoft has detected a virus, and you need to call the number that has been presented ASAP. Do NOT shut your computer off. In most cases, this is a scam. You have possibly looked at a website that has been comprised. They prey on fear, that the person will not shut the computer down and call the number. Once the person has received approval for them to get on the computer, they now have access to your computer to do anything in the background to include forcing you to pay to gain access back to your data. Do not fall for this scam and Do not Give Access to your Computer. Contact a local professional company.

Phishing
Should you receive any emails, text messages or even snail mail wanting you to call a number to give them your personal information, (Social Security, Date of Birth, Passwords, Bank Account information) do not fall this. Most companies that are reputable will not reach out to you and ask for personal information.

Emergency Scams
These scams are targeted on the elderly, sometimes known as the Grandparent Scams. They will call or send an email claiming that one of the loves ones need emergency funds. They will use caller ID that that may show a familiar number. This is called “SPOOFING”. They can usually find information about the family on the internet and give those names to you. During these difficult times, you will want to stay calm and think about where that loved one is at. See if you can call their number or someone that might know exactly where they are at.

Debts
These scams try to get payment on a debt that you do not really have. If you have never heard of the company or debt that they are claiming you have, do not make any payment until you can do more research. Make sure it is real and legitimate creditor. Make sure that you have not lost your identity.

Home Repair Scams
Some scams come directly to your house by an unsolicited door-to-door home improvement person. They will tell you that it is a onetime offer as they do have left over supplies from other jobs. Do not fall for these. Take your time if you do need home improvements and get several quotes from reputable companies.
